Get To Know Us
PEQUEÑOS EMPRESARIOS INC. is a non-profit organization founded in Madera, California, in April 2010. Our mission is to organize workshops in Spanish for kids between 7 and 12 years old that help them improve their social and family bonds. Our playful approach helps children develop their self-esteem and gain finance, manners and environmental knowledge while learning a second language.
We believe in family as the core of society and that’s why we want kids to explore a healthy communication with their relatives and with their chosen family: their friends. A child with the support of their family and friends is a child with self-confidence, one capable of becoming a positive leader for his/her community.
Education is something we also value highly. Knowledge and traditions are necessary for building a human being’s identity and they are tools that will serve him/her throughout all his/her life. An educated child is a potential good citizen.
Finally, community work is another one of our core values. We are a non-profit organization looking to better our immediate social environment and we believe that we will only change the world if we lend a helping hand to the most vulnerable. We have many testimonies of children and parents from the hundreds of families we’ve helped over the last six years.
To help educate elementary-school-aged children through various workshops in Spanish that will strengthen and improve their social and family bonds, while learning a second language. Our playful approach allows kids to develop their self-esteem and learn about finance, good manners and environmental awareness, thus, preparing them to find their own place in their family and community.
We aim to change the world, starting by the younger ones. We want to instill positive values to our next generations such as good manners, environmental care and smart, honest finances. Our goal is to educate as most children as possible so they can become the future leaders of our communities.
One of our main values is family as the core unit of society. We want kids to explore a healthy communication with their original family and with their chosen family: their friends. A child with the support of their family and friends is a child with self-confidence, one capable of becoming a positive leader for his/her community.
Education is another value of ours. Knowledge and traditions are necessary for building a human being’s identity and they are tools that will serve him/her throughout all his/her life. An educated child is a potential good citizen.
We also greatly value community work. We are a non-profit organization looking to better our immediate social environment. We believe that we will only change the world if we lend a helping hand to the most vulnerable.
Our goal is to expand our work area beyond Madera and Fresno, CA, so we can give our workshops to as most children as possible and prepare them to build a better future.
It all started with a game in April 2010, in Madera, California. When I realized that my son needed assistance learning Spanish, I looked for fun ways to help him. I gathered his friends and other kids from the block in my backyard, put a blanket on the ground where we would all sit and serve them pieces of different fruits so we could all talk and interact.
I realized that, just as my family, children in our community weren’t only in desperate need of positive activities; they had a very poor knowledge of their own culture and traditions. I noticed the rise of young people getting into gangs, using drugs and dropping out of school because they couldn’t picture themselves in college. I discovered that a lot of young people were ashamed of their roots; some of them even of their native language: Spanish. I thought to myself: What does the future hold for my community?
As I became aware of this, a little flame lit up in my heart. I wanted to do something about it. That’s when the idea was born: creating a preventive program where kids could assist to English and leadership workshops.
Other four women joined the project and helped me by selling tamales and chocolates, making raffles and many other activities to raise funds for the payment of the teachers. Bit by bit, we introduced new dynamics, games, songs and different classes, and, we started looking for other places for our activities to take place. Kids started to feel and envision themselves differently. They started acting more confidently, they improved their schoolwork, they bettered their family relationships, they raised their self-esteem and they began to express themselves with confidence and respect. That’s what made us decide to make this dream come true.
So, Jacinta Beatriz Berrocal, Norma Chávez, María Vargas and Yesenia Hipólito, who believed in my idea, and myself, officially founded this non-profit organization called PEQUEÑOS EMPRESARIOS, INC., on July 24th, 2014.
Today, our children have the chance of a bright future. We’re not trying to make a better future for our children; we’re strengthening our children for the future. These are children who have business mentality, high self-esteem, confidence to become the entrepreneurs for their dreams; children who are empowered to achieve their goals and make a difference in their school, their family, their community and the world. As our motto states: “Children in action for a better world”.
